Asymptomatic bacteriuria in pregnant Nigerian women at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, south west Nigeria

Background: Dipstick urinalysis is a handy and cost effective method for the early detection of asymptomatic bacteriuria. Asymptomatic bacteriuria occurs in 2-10% pregnancies has been associated with low birth weight preterm delivery pregnant women if untreated. Objective: To determine incidence pregnancy, distribution infecting organisms antibiotic sensitivity pattern Nigerian attending antenatal clinic Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi- Araba, Lagos. Methodology: This was prospective study. The study population were 201 consecutive women, who attended LUTH booking between 1st July 31st December, 2021. Two urine samples collected analysed microscopy, culture urinalysis. outcomes interest prevalence at LUTH, bacterial isolates, their pattern. Results: mean age studied 31years ± 4.56SD. gestational 23.8 5.39 SD range 11-34 weeks; majority participants (65.7%) recruited ages 14 26 weeks. this 13.9%. commonest isolated organism klebsiella (46.4%) followed by Escherichia coli (21.4%). Ceftazidime, ofloxacin, gentamycin showed good overall 92.9%, 89.3%, 67.9%% respectively. From results urinalysis, nitrites 48.3% specificity 98.2% positive predictive value 83.3% while presence cells on microscopy 31.2%, 85% 27%. Conclusion: considerably high therefore, there may be need to consider introduction routine or second trimester.
